Arathi School of Indian Dance founded in 1981 and is the oldest premiere dance organization for Bharathanatyam in San Antonio. Mission of the organization is excellence in Indian dance training. The vision is to reach out to people through the ancient, esthetic dance forms of India transcending language, economic, racial and religious barriers. The school has presented major productions like, Athmalinga, Hamasa based on the immortal Swan Lake, La Meri – highlighting the life of La Meri the queen of Ethnic Dance, Kavitha – featuring poems of Rabindranath Tagore, Yeats, Maya Angelou and Pablo Niruda and over ten smaller productions.The school has held the Arangetram of 36 students and five Salangai Puja of groups of students. In 2012 the 30 year Anniversary of the school was celebrated. The book titled ‘Arathi – Thirty year history of dance in San Antonio’, published in 2012 at the 30 year anniversary, is the first such chronicle of dance history in the Indian diaspora in the west.
